Limited funding opportunity—only TWO applicants are permitted from Stanford therefore a university-wide internal selection process is required.

Overview

The Packard Fellowships for Science and Engineering program invests in future leaders who have the freedom to take risks, explore new frontiers in their fields of study, and follow uncharted paths that may lead to groundbreaking discoveries. The Fellowship Program provides support for highly creative researchers early in their careers; faculty members who are well established and well-funded are less likely to receive the award. Packard Fellows are inquisitive, passionate scientists and engineers. Disciplines that will be considered include physics, chemistry, mathematics, biology, astronomy, computer science, earth science, ocean science, and all branches of engineering. Candidates engaged in research in the social sciences will not be considered.

Amount

$875,000 distributed over five years.

Eligibility

Candidates must be faculty members who are eligible to serve as principal investigators engaged in research in the natural and physical sciences or engineering and must be within the first three years of their faculty careers.  At the time of proposal submission, an applicant’s initial appointment must have begun no earlier than May 31, 2017, and no later than May 31, 2020.

  • February 24, 2020  Each school representative sends school selected (3 proposals max. Per school) proposals to VP DoR Limited submissions Team via limitedsubmissions [at] stanford.edu (limitedsubmissions[at]stanford[dot]edu) 
  • February 27,  2020 VP DoR Review Committee Meeting
  • March 16, 2020 - Nominations are due to the Foundation (sent by the Office of the President)
  • April 13, 2020 PDRF and  full proposals of 2 chosen candidates due to OSR/RMG for review 
  • April 20, 2020 - All application materials (described in the 2020 Program Guidelines) must be submitted by the PI, to the Foundation, via the Packard’s Foundation online portal

This letter should describe first-hand knowledge of the nominee's ability to do creative research. Nominees with a joint appointment can submit one letter signed by both department chairs.

Internal Selection process

Each school will select three proposals to be forwarded to the Office of the Vice Provost and Dean of Research Limited Submission Review Committee. That committee will select the two applicants to represent Stanford.
